Wenatchee Boys WIN the All-Sports Trophy
It was a great day for me to bring the plaque to Wenatchee. I was surprised to look at the plaque and recognize that this began in the 1971-72 school year. I read down the list of schools that have won it and we have NEVER been on it. So, not only is this great news that our boys won this award, it's been 35 years in existence and it's our 1st time. Congratulations to our athletes, coaches and parents. We are all in this together and it takes support, work ethic and team work amongst us all to achieve excellence. It's a very proud time. I personally hope we can hold on to the trophy for a few more years ...
Summer Activities have begun
As you know, sometimes summer is just as busy as the school year. Hopefully your athlete has been cleared so he/she can participate fully is open gym, summer running, weight room, etc for the summer. Our clearance is over but we are taking a few stragglers this week. As of thursday, June 21, we will NOT put any more athletes in the system.
Weight Room - Hours are 9am-10:30am and 6:00-7:30pm Monday - Friday. The only day we are closed is July 4th. Yesterday I popped my head in around 9:15 and there were at least 30 athletes working out. I stopped by in the evening and there were about 20. Great job. All of our athletes need to be lifting to keep them strong so they can compete at a high level and most importantly to keep them healthy and less injury prone when the season begins.
Summer Sports - I have 2 things I'd like to share with you about summer sports:
1. They are optional. Coaches will provide as many opportunities for skill development and team play as they can. We also try to work together with other sports. But, keep in mind that this is summer and your family time is important. In addition, conflicts will arise if your athlete is involved in multiple sports. Be sure your athlete is communicating to their coaches if schedule conflicts come up. Coaches are always willing to flex and will often ask if the athlete can "split time" between the 2 activities. As parents, you need to insure that your athlete is getting time to recoup and enjoy summer.
2. Just a heads up that many sports get involved in tournaments over the summer in which kids are put on teams. I would like to encourage you as parents to continually support your athlete through the summer months without getting hung up on the making of teams. The coaches are usually working around schedules and utilizing information about the tournaments to make teams. Sometimes parents begin to think teams are being made for the school year during the summer. Yes, coaches to like to see how kids play in different situations, however, they are not making teams. We save that for the first week or two of tryouts.
Athletic Office Information and Reminders
Our office will be providing limited service during the Month of July. We open full swing again around August 8th.
Fall Sports Schedules will be posted in July on our website. (Remember, these can change, so be sure to check back regularly)
The website continues to change and get updated. I have added a new link called "sports information" which might be helpful to parents as well as key dates for the 07-08 school year. http://whs.wsd.wednet.edu/Faculty/Athletics/Athletichome.html
Key Fall Sports Dates are as follows :
August 15th - First day of Football
August 20th - First day of Girls Swim, Volleyball, Cross Country, Girls Soccer
August 24th - Fall Sports Pictures
August 27th - Fall Sports Kickoff - I begin speaking at 6:30 in the apple bowl. Between 5:30-6:30 parents can join booster club, buy season sports passes, have a snack, mix and mingle. Come early so you can get everything done you want before we begin. By 7:00 or so, you will break off into meetings by sport. Each coach will be doing a sign in and may require your attendance for your athlete to participate so I encourage you to be there.
November 20th - Fall Sports Awards = I begin speaking at 6:30 in the main gym. All kids that participate will receive a certificate. Be sure to attend.
GRADES
Grades will be posted in the next few days and I will be running reports.
In order to be eligible to compete in the fall, each athlete must have earned above a 2.0 on their semester report card (and, may have just 1 F). Middle School grades are used to determine high school eligibility. If your athlete is in trouble of being eligible, you will receive a letter from me explaining their situation.
Booster Club Update
We already have a few people that have signed up to be members for the 2007-08 school year. If you are interested in taking care of your membership during the summer months, you can print the form from our website: http://whs.wsd.wednet.edu/Faculty/Athletics/supporters/supporters.html or, you can wait until August and sign up at or fall sport kickoff or..... we have the option this year to have memberships taken care of online through the GOUSA website. They are going to help us out and allow you to join using their system. I will email you when this becomes available.
Our board for the 07-08 booster club is complete and now we are simply looking for a handful of worker-bees. We can use some help with a few concession issues:
Football Small Concessions - needs a lead to attend the 5 football games and get the concessions up and running and help monitor the team that comes in to work.
Frosh and JV Football - we have a trailer that we can pull up to the track to provide concessions at football games. Usually a parent or 2 of a player works the concession and watches the game at the same time. Please let me know if you are willing!!!
We are still looking for some people to take 3-4 basketball games and wrestling matches. If your willing, send me an email and we'll sign you up.
HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER.
REST, RELAX, ENJOY the SUNSHINE !!!!
