Sports Information Handout : As presented in the Spring of 2008 to incoming Freshman Parents and Newcomers to WHS Athletics.

General Information about Sports at Wenatchee High School:

We compete in the Big 9. Our 4A league opponents are : Moses Lake, Richland, Pasco, Walla Walla, Davis, Eisenhower, Eastmont, Kennewick, Kamiakin and Southridge
Our 3A members of the league are: West Valley, Sunnyside and Hanford.
Travel to competitions in our league require significant time out of school and extended hours.
Weekday travel almost always requires athletes to miss 5th and 6th period. The leave time is dependent upon the location and game time. Some sports require more out time than others.
Travel also includes many late nights. It is not uncommon for a team to return to WHS as late as midnight or 1am.
Student-athletes are expected to attend school all day on game days as well as the day after a game (home or away).
Athletes should pack a healthy snack to eat on the road trip prior the game and should either pack a dinner or bring money as the team usually stops for dinner on the way home.
Many teams have "team dinners" the night before a contest and parents are asked to take turns hosting the dinner.

Every Athlete is expected to participate in strength training as a part of thier physical education class or after school with our strength and conditioning coach. If you are not in a sport, you should be in the weight room a minimum of 3 times each week.
Many sports provide "open gym", "summer camps", "spring camps", "club","summer leagues", etc and athletes are encouraged to paricipate in these activiies during the off season. We do our best, as a school to schedule things that would eliminate too much conflict, however, schedule conflicts happen. Families are encouraged to communicate with the coaches problem solve any conflicts well in advance.

Football	BOYS 9th, JV and Varsity	Wednesday, August 20, 2008 * This is before school starts	9th and JV - November 10 Varisty - League Schedule ends on Friday, Nov. 7. State Championship is December 6, 2008.	All 3 teams practice daily @ Wenatchee High School. Practice is typically immediately after school until 5:30-6pm	10 Contests Compete against league opponents with an occasional non-league. 9th on Fridays before Varsity JV on Mondays Varsity on Friday nights	Provide own cleats, mouthguard.
Volleyball	GIRLS 9B, 9A, C, JV and Varsity	Monday, August 25, 2008 * This is before school starts	Non Varsity Teams - Thursday October 23. Varsity - State Championship is Saturday, November 15, 2008.	All 5 teams practice daily @ Wenatchee High School. Practice is typically immediately after school until 5:30-6:00pm	16 Contests + Jamboree Usually 14 are league contests on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturdays There are usually 2 all-day Saturday tournaments as well.	Provide own shoes, kneepads and will need to purchase uniform shorts and practice gear.
Cross Country	BOYS and GIRLS JV and Varsity	Monday, August 25, 2008 * This is before school starts	Non Varsity Runners - Thursday, October 16. Varsity Runners - State Championship is Saturday, November 8, 2008.	Practice daily, mostly based out of Wenatchee High School. Usually 1-2x each week the team will practice at Walla Walla Point Park (parents will need to transport runners)	10 Contests Usually 3 league meets (Tues- Thursday) and the rest are Invitationals on Saturdays.	Provide own running shoes.
Girls Swimming-Diving	GIRLS JV and Varsity	Monday, August 25, 2008 * This is before school starts	Non Varsity Swim/Dive - Saturday October 25. Varisty Swim/Dive - State Championships is Saturday November 15, 2008.	Practice daily @ Wenatchee High School Pool. Practice is typically immediately after school until around 5:30pm for the swimmers. Divers typically practice from 5:00-6:30pm	12 Contests + Jamboree 5-6 League Contests (Tues, Thurs, Sat) and a few Invites. Dive has 3 11 dive meets that are seperate from the league contests.	Provide own suit and goggles. May purchase team suit. Required to purchase team swim cap.
Girls Soccer	GIRLS A Team, JV and Varsity	Monday, August 25, 2008 * This is before school starts	Non Varsity - Saturday October 25. Varsity State Championship is Saturday November 22, 2008.	Practice daily @ Triangle Park. Typically immediately after school until 5:30-6:00pm	16 contests 14 contests are in the league play and 2 are usually non-league. Games are on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays	Provide own cleats and shin guards. Will need to purchase team socks.

Varsity State Championship is Saturday February 7, 2009. * Will practice during thanksgiving and christmas vacation.	Practice is held @ Eastmont Lanes. Varsity pracitces M-F 3:30-5:00 JV practices Tue-Fri 3:30-5:00 WHS does supply school bus transportation to the bowling alley Tue-Fri.	18 contests + Jamboree All 18 contests are league contests on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The athletes that compete, will miss school most every Tuesday and Thursday during the season.	Provide own shoes (can borrow from lanes)
Wrestling	BOYS JV and Varsity	Monday, November 17, 2008	JV - February 2, 2008 Varisty - State Championship is on February 16, 2008. * Will practice during thanksgiving and christmas vacation.	Teams practice daily @ Wenatchee High School. Practice is typically immediately after school until 5:30-6pm. If they do not wrestle on Saturday, they will practice on Saturday.	16 Contests Approximately 7 league contests (Tuesdays and Thursdays). The rest are invites on Saturdays.	Provide own wrestling shoes.
Girls Basketball	GIRLS 9B, 9A, C, JV and Varsity	Monday, November 17, 2008	Non Varsity Teams - Thursday February 7, 2009. Varsity - State Championship is Saturday, February 21, 2009. * Will practice during thanksgiving and christmas vacation.	All 5 teams practice daily @ Wenatchee High School. Practice times are alternated with boys basketball between early practice (3:30-6:00pm) and late practice (6:00-8:30pm).	20 Contests 18 contests are league contests. Games are mostly Friday/Saturday with a few Tuesdays. If a team is home on Friday, they will travel on Saturday and vice-versa.	Provide own basketball shoes.

V plays Tues - Friday JV and 9th Plays Wed - Saturday C plays Mon, Wed, Thur and Sat	Provide own cleats, mitt. Required to purchase team belt, hat and sleeves.
Fastpitch	GIRLS 9, C, JV and Varsity	Monday, March 1, 2009	Non Varsity - May 5, 2009 Varsity State Championship is Saturday May 28, 2009.	Practice is daily at Walla Walla Point Park usually from 3:30-6:00pm. Athletes have to find transportation to and from practice.	20 Contests + Jamboree Games are usually double headers. Games are usually on Tuesdays and Fridays.	Provide own cleats and mit.
Track	GIRLS and BOYS JV and Varsity	Monday, March 1, 2009	Non Varsity - May 5, 2009 Varsity State Championship is Saturday May 28, 2009.	Teams practice daily at Wenatchee High School. Usually from 3:30-6:00pm.	10 contests + Jamboree Usually 4 meets are for the league (Tuesday- Thursday) and the rest are invites on Saturdays.	Provide own shoes/spikes.
Tennis	BOYS and GIRLS C, JV and Varsity	Monday, March 1, 2009	Non Varsity - May 5, 2009 Varsity State Championship is Saturday May 28, 2009.	Teams practice daily. C and JV @ Wenatchee High School, Varsity @ WRAC. Athletes have to find transportation to and from practice. Practice usually lasts from about 3:30-6:00pm	16 contests + Jamboree The league has most contests on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. There are also a few invites on Saturdays.	Provide own racquet. Will need to purchase uniform top.
Boys Soccer	BOYS C, JV and Varsity	Monday, March 1, 2009	Non Varsity - May 5, 2009 Varsity State Championship is Saturday May 28, 2009.	Practice daily @ Triangle Park. Practice usually lasts from about 3:30-6:00pm	16 contests + Jamboree 14 contests are usually filled by league play on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with an occasional Friday. The other contests are picked up as non-league.	Provide own cleats and shin guards. Will need to purchase team socks.
GOLF	BOYS and GIRLS JV and Varsity	Monday, March 1, 2009	Non Varsity - May 5, 2009 Varsity State Championship is Wednesday May 28, 2009	Practice daily @ Three Lakes Golf Course. Practice usually lasts from about 3:30-6:00pm. Athletes need to find transportation to and from practice.	12 contests + Jamboree There are usually 4-5 league contests and the rest are invites and non-league contests. Many contests are on Mondays and Wednesdays.	Provide own clubs.
