Learning Spanish can be interesting, exciting and fun, and I look forward to sharing that with you. Most of us wouldnt think of taking a drivers licensing exam or competing in a sports contest without first practicing. Using a second language is no different. Research has shown that second language success is based on daily practice and memorization. If there is no specific homework assignment on a given day, students should be reviewing notes and vocabulary for the current unit at least once a day outside of class. Remember, you are learning a skill, and mastering skills takes time, practice and patience. Please read the following information and keep it at the front of the Spanish section of your notebook for future reference all year. Also please complete, sign and return the Contact Information Sheet at the back of this packet. Parents, this is your son or daughters first homework/practice assignment, so thank you for helping him/her get off to a good start. Keep asking and sharing about what we are learning in class and feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns. In the meantime, I hope we can agree that: It is your responsibility to: Monitor grades regularly, either online or via classroom postings Make arrangements with me to make up missed work or seek any additional help needed Contact me if you have questions or concerns It is my responsibility to: Provide comprehensible instruction in Spanish Provide frequent feedback about student progress by grading work and posting grades online in a timely manner Be available for make-up work and tutoring help I hope to see you at Open House on September 22nd at 6:30 p.m. Best regards, Kris Cameron Attendance Success is linked to classroom activities that frequently cannot be recreated for students who are absent. Please make every attempt to schedule appointments or trips outside of school time since absences may negatively affect student progress. Please report to class prepared and on time. For more detailed information about WHS attendance policy, please consult page 6 of the student planner or the WHS website. Classroom Procedures and Expectations: Students will be required to adhere to the WHS policy for behavior as stated in the student handbook. I will appreciate your cooperation and participation in class and your respectful treatment of yourself, others and our classroom. Please be in your seat prepared and on time and wait to be dismissed at the end of each class period. My motto is work hard and be nice. I encourage students to bring water in a resealable container to class. Stay hydrated to keep your energy high! Cell phone use is never permitted in the classroom. Course Description and Prerequisites: Prerequisites for this course are an open mind about other cultures, a respect for self and others, and a willingness to work hard, have fun and interact with classmates. Students will be introduced to the basics of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. They will have the opportunity to build skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing through work in pairs, small groups and individually. Students will be able to interact using the present tense in situations and about topics such as greetings and introductions, family and home, school, telling time, shopping, weather, etc. We will play games, sing and use drama to supplement our use of the text, videos and CDs. Students will be asked to create products in Spanish. Grading Students will be assessed and evaluated on meeting course standards in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Final grades are determined as follows: 70% Performance Assessments: tests, quizzes, oral evaluations, projects, etc. 20% Classroom Participation (including attentiveness in class, being on time and prepared for class) 10% Homework Completion 100% FINAL GRADE Grades are available at any time online, and will be posted by student identification number in the classroom on a weekly basis. Grades will be determined according to the following scale: 93% - 100% A 87% - 89% B+ 77% - 79% C+ 69% or lower F 90% - 92% A- 83% - 86% B 73% - 76% C 80% - 82% B- 70% - 72% C- Students must earn at least a grade of C- to earn credit for the course and to advance to the next level. Students earning less than 70% at the end of the semester will not be permitted to continue to the next semester in the sequence. There is no D grade. At times we are assessing for outcomes other than spelling, however, at other times students will be held accountable for spelling and conventions, including accents and tildes Students may be penalized for spelling errors if the error changes the meaning of the word, or if a native Spanish speaker would not comprehend the word as written. Students will always be informed in advance regarding how they will be graded. Late Assignments/Missed Exams I do not accept late work unless due to illness or otherwise arranged with me. I cannot accept make-up work resulting from an unexcused absence. All make-up exams/tests must be taken within one week of returning from an excused absence to receive credit. Missed or failed exams must be retaken before or after school. Out of Class Help I welcome the opportunity to provide additional help to your child, so please encourage him/her to ask for help during class if it is needed. There is a sign-up sheet in the classroom for students to make appointments with me before or after school for the purpose of making up exams or to receive extra help. Plagiarism and Cheating You are expected to demonstrate your learning in an academically honest way. All work in this class must be your own original work. Cheating robs you of a learning opportunity and your teacher of a chance to fairly assess your progress. Cheating includes use of automated translation engines from the Internet or translation software, asking a tutor/native speaker to look over your work, providing answers to a classmate during tests or simply allowing someone to copy your work. Avoid even the appearance of cheating or giving any reason for your teacher to believe that cheating might have taken place. If you are academically dishonest, you should expect these consequences: loss of all credit for the assignment, test or activity with no possibility for another attempt parent contact referral to administrator possible failure of course This policy is based on the policies of Kent State University and the University of Washington.
