ACADEMIC CHALLENGE
PURPOSE
Academic Challenge is designed for students desiring a rigorous and well-balanced program in academic disciplines. Only freshmen may apply after first semester during the enrollment period. Transfer students
who are sophomores may petition the committee for admittance.

REQUIREMENTS
In addition to high school graduation requirements, the following requirements must be completed. Advanced courses are recommended if available. A Verification Form (available in the Counseling Office) must be submitted at least once a year. The recommended deadline is November 1 to confirm the following requirements:
GPA: Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA each semester.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Completion of four years (4 credits) in Language Arts.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE:
Completion of three years (3 credits) of the same Foreign Language.
MATHEMATICS:
Completion of the Mathematics sequence through Trigonometry (not Algebra 2/Trig) or Precalculus.
SCIENCE:
Completion of 3 credits including at least two of the following courses: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Completion of the required 3 high school credits; advanced sections recommended where available. An online course may not replace Citizen Washington except the course offered through Wenatchee Internet Academy.
OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION:
Completion of the required 1.5 credits, including Business Computer Applications 1. Students may apply for Competency Based Credit by completing the required forms, fulfilling requirements and paying the applicable fees. BIT 101 at Wenatchee Valley College also fulfills this requirement.
EXTRA CURRICULAR PARTICIPATION:
Participation in one school sport (season) or one school activity (club) is required per school year. Participation in these programs is sometimes a deciding factor for entrance into some universities and is definitely important in scholarship competition. Golden Apple Band may be used only if you earn a letter or pin.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Community Service is defined as serving others without any monetary reward or as a requirement for a class or club. For example, this community service cannot be the same project that you would use for a Boy or Girl Scout badge. You must complete at least 10 hours each year. Your plans for community service on the application must be very specific and approved by the Academic Challenge Committee.

Managing Youth Athletic Program Honor Society Tutoring
DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARD
This award is for students who have achieved a higher level of performance in the Academic Challenge Program. It will be awarded at graduation. In order to achieve the Distinguished Scholar level in the Academic Challenge Program, students must fulfill the following additional requirements:
Distinguished Scholar is only awarded at graduation, and students may not list this on college or scholarship applications unless it has been authorized by Mrs. Bawden. Please contact her at 662-9047 for verification.
