What are some helpful hints for success?

"I'm going to do whatever I can to pass." - Gerardo Baltazar, WHS Class of 2008

As you've seen from the EALRs and GLEs, the WASL covers a lot of territory.  It's going to be asking you to tap in to all of your years of experience as a student, so it's not exactly something you can cram for the night before.  However, there are some things you can do in the weeks, months, and years prior to the WASL that will help you be prepared when the time comes to fill in that booklet.

BEFORE THE WASL:

  • At the beginning of your freshman year, review your academic history with your parents, counselor, and/or culminating project (CP) advisor.  Find out where you stand, and on what areas you need to focus.
  • Review and understand your previous test data.  Identify your specific strengths and weaknesses.   Work with your CP advisor in getting to know your assessment profile, and include your WASL goals as part of your overall Student Learning Plan in your CP portfolio.
  • As mentioned on the previous page, get to know the GLEs so you know what will be expected of you.
  • Spend some time looking at previous WASL questions and any other samples you can find.  Don't let yourself be surprised by the format of the test when you sit down to take it.
  • Read up on the policies, rules, and procedures, and keep up on the latest information for special populations (Special Education, 504 plans, ELL/Bilingual, migrant, and highly capable).
  • You could also check out the new WASL Resource Center 2006 for additional information.
  • Get a good night's sleep and relax.
DURING THE WASL:
  • Make sure you're present!  Check the 2006 WASL calendar.  If you miss a day, you will need to retake it in August.  Again, please see all the policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Read all the questions carefully and completely.
  • Use all the tools you can.  When allowed, use a calculator, dictionary, or whatever will help.  Also, follow any suggestions provided in the directions--some will provide step-by-step directions for success.
  • Answer the questions as completely as you can, and always follow the directions as specifically as possible.  Pay attention to the specific request.
  • Apply your best English skills.  Write as clearly as you can, use complete sentences, punctuate, etc.
  • Use all the time available for revisions, corrections, and rethinking.
  • Do your best
