References and Resources

This could be a very long list, as it is very easy to quickly become overwhelmed by articles, reports, data, and opinions on this topic.  Therefore, I've attempted to narrow it down to the "Top 10 WASL Resources" for anyone who would like to get a better handle on the topic.  Many of these are already linked within the Webquest itself.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction - Better known as OSPI, this link will take you to the source of many of the links included in this Webquest and all things WASL.  It's not the easiest site to navigate, but it does seem to be improving.

No Child Left Behind - Here's where you can learn all about the federal law behind "adequate yearly progress."  Remember, the WASL was in place long before NCLB--our state uses the WASL as its "AYP" yardstick.   Like the OSPI site, you'll find an overwhelming amount of information here--just be sure to start with the "overview" links.  Note: this link is also available throughout the Webquest in the left navigation bar.

WASL Resource Center 2006 - New for March 2006, this project provides a variety of resources, including links to sample questions and the latest information about retakes (but not nearly as much as this site!).

The EALRs and the GLEs - This is the easiest Web-based means for accessing our state's learning standards.  You'll also find links here that will allow you to download information or order printed copies.  This link is also in the left navigation bar.

Washington State School Report Cards - Do want data on how kids are doing around the state?  Start here!  This site breaks down the information by demographics, makes comparisons between schools, provides historical information, and much more.  It's so good, it too is included in the left navigation bar!

The Washington State Board of Education - Another site with great resources, including the latest information on graduation requirements and useful links for parents, students, and teachers.

Graduation Requirements - Here are the lastest handbooks in English and Spanish that provide all the details.

List of Educational Acronyms - WASL, NCLB, GLE, EALR, AYP, OSPI--it's enough to drive anyone crazy.  IMHO, keeping all of these acronyms straight can be a real PITA.  This list will help.

WASL Q and A - This is a nice, simple document from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that addresses many of the common questions surrounding the WASL.  It was published in 2005.

The Class of 2008: Facing the Test - Keep checking this ongoing special report from The Seattle Times for updates on the WASL, interesting profiles of students, and many other features and opinions.
