Mrs. McPhetridge's Freshman English

Welcome! Throughout the year in Freshman English we will be focusing on improving your reading, writing, speaking and analysis of literature as well as examining the universal themes of coming of age and heroes. We will examine these themes both in literature we read as well as in our own lives and the lives of others.

First semester has a writing empathetic but we will still work on our reading. By the end of the semester, we will have written several types of essays (descriptive, narrative, expository and analysis) and other types of writing assignments, as well as working to improve writing skills through learning to write effective introductions, including descriptive elements in our writing, and improving our sentence fluency and grammar skills. Each quarter you will be able to choose a novel/book to read that fits your reading level, but we will also read a variety of literature as a class.

Second Semester our focus will switch to reading and analyzing some classic pieces of literature such as Romeo and Juliet, and The Odyssey. We will also read several classic short stories and poems. You will still have a choice novel/book for each quarter. We will also have a variety of writing assignments this semester building on our skills from first semester.
