Project: Pesticides and Agriculture

Contact Name: Debra Martin (dmartin1@tacoma.k12.wa.us)

School: Lincoln High School

Date Completed: Spring 2005

Details: Six students sat around a sort of u-shaped table and read their notes on the effect of agricultural chemicals on human health. They focussed on fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Their information included the types of chemicals commonly used, how humans are exposed, the risks to humans who come in contact with the chemicals and some of the symptoms of exposure. One student described his interview with his grandfather from eastern Washington, who lives near agricultural land. The group had a display and included a brief skit that emphasized awareness of pesticides and the need to wear protective gear when applying them. They ended by describing some natural pesticides that might be used as alternatives to the man-made chemical varieties.
