AP US History

Mr. Kalahar

Document Based Question Review

Objective: To create a DBQ in the allotted time period to help understand the development of the DBQ itself and to help us prepare for the exam.

Process:

  1. You and a partner (if you choose) will pick a general category from the list provided by Mr. K.
  2. From there you will research the time period and general category to narrow your topic to something considerably smaller and detailed to base your question.
  3. You will develop a question, statement, or argument for your DBQ that will test the readerŐs knowledge of the time period and their ability to synthesize the data that you will provide.
  4. Then, using your textbook, primary source reader, and resources outside of the class, you and your partner will add a minimum of eight lettered documents. These documents will help the reader answer your question using their own knowledge as well. Do not give them everything they need to answer the question; make them bring in their own outside knowledge. If there are conflicting documents, use them to make them question more difficult. You know the designers of the AP test will do that as well.
  5. After this process is complete, you will then complete the analysis steps of creating a DBQ as described on the back.

Items for the documents include: charts, graphs, tables, political cartoons, quoted material (at least three), speeches, song lyrics, bills, acts, laws, Supreme Court Cases, flyers, advertisements, etc.

Requirement for Project

  1. Create the DBQ question and provide documents (30 points)

  1. Create a scoring rubric for you question (10 points)

á      Scores for 8-9, 5-7, 2-4, 0-1, and off topic response will be addressed

á      This needs to be a question specific rubric

  1. Create a DBQ Documents short list (10 points)

á      Give a brief overview of Documents

  1. Create a DBQ Document analysis page (25 points)

  1. Finally, you will create an outside knowledge list or chart (25 points)

á      This is where you describe the possible outside knowledge that you have cleverly left out of the documents that the reader could use in his/her paper.

Upon completion of this assignment, you will be expected to present the DBQ question, documents, and outside knowledge to the class in a brief presentation. The presentations should five to ten minutes in length.
