The pond, grass and creekbed you see to your right were constructed as Phase I of the WHS Courtyard Project. This student initiated project, chaired by the 1995-96 ASB Vice President, Brian Wendt, was funded by the Dance Marathon fundraiser and a generous $1,000 donation from the Class of 1996.
Andrew Wendell, PUD draftsman, volunteered his time late last winter to draw up the plans and then 25 students cleared the area in one workday last spring, removing 8 dumptruck loads of weeds, vines, shrubs and trees. They then dug the pond hole and creekbed out in shifts after school.
After the liner was in place, students wheelbarrowed in 15 tons of river rock for the construction of the pond and creek. Later, the leadership class put down 1,200 feet of sod along the bank and other students put down 1,000 more feet in August.
Students contracted with Gary Sauer, Northwest Ponds, Inc. to lay the pond/bed liner, construct the pump system, and build the rock structures.
The entire Phase I renovation project included over 250 hours of WHS student labor, approximately $4,200 in raised funds, and excellent support from the administration, teaching staff and you, the community.
